I arrived to my sit spot at November 3rd ,2019 9:57am and I left at 10:58am. I chose this time because I have never gone to my sit spot in the morning and especially like right after I wake up. I also chose it because I looked out my window in the morning and saw how blue the sky was. The weather was a perfect no cloud in the sky, sunny day at around 50 degrees, absolutely gorgeous. There was a strong breeze, it was an early morning type breeze. I still did my sit spot on the same day, but that was because Sunday’s are my most stressful day and doing the sit spot blog makes me more relaxed.
It has been two weeks since I have been to my sit spot and a ton has changed in that time. The biggest difference was the trees. In which most of them have lost more their leaves. For example when we did the last sit spot blog the tree that I observed was covered with leaves and crawling with insects, but this time it had nothing! There were no leaves and, no bugs! It is incredible to see that change in such a short period of time. There were also quite a few branches laying around, which means the wind was super strong at one point. Also, due to the fact it is the morning the shadows of the trees and bushes were different because when I would normally go out around, there was also quite a lot foot traffic in the morning then the afternoon, which I found interesting. Also, the rolling hills that are to the right of my sit spot were full of colors instead of just being green, which they used to be. The weather was like I said above not a cloud in the sky, 50 degrees and a light fall breeze. I most heard animals, but never saw them except the one squirrel I saw far in the distance. I believed the animals I mostly heard were birds, but I am horrible at telling from just the chirp. I do 100% believe that I heard a Bald Eagle off in the distance and I was like eeek so cool!
The three things that I have been tracking are again the American Sycamore, number of squirrels and the grass. So to start off is the update about the Sycamore tree, which is the biggest change. At the start of the semester the bark was mostly brown, but as the leaves started falling off, so has the bark. Now you see the white underbelly. Speaking of leaves most of them have come off the tree, but there is still some on. Next is the grass the only change is that is looks a little less green and that most leaves are on top of it, and there is one purple flower left! The most depressing of all of them is the squirrel I only saw one alive one, but I also saw a dead squirrel that had been eaten, by a hawk I guess.
That’s so amazing that you saw a bald eagle! And I feel so bad for the squirrel poor thing. Though, I love to see your tree’s transition throughout the year and how different it’s becoming
I enjoyed reading about the tree changing throughout the duration of your sit spot. I liked your observation of the bark on the tree-it seems super interesting. Does it seem like the bark got ripped off by something? Or do you think it’s something natural and happens to all of those tree species? That poor squirrel ahhh but good for the hawk/predator.
