During the first 15 minutes of being at my sit spot I noticed a lot of air travel. There were birds, flies, bees, and countless unknown organisms. I had forgotten to change my flowery mask before I went to my sit spot and many of the organisms were drawn towards it. This special place had subtle differences from the last time I was here. More leaves on the ground and in the stream, the air traffic picked up, and the squirrels did not want to come out and play. As the leaves were falling behind me, I saw their shadows that looked like the birds flying high. Another difference I saw was that the creek did not have any visible activity as I am sure there was a lot that I couldn’t see.
The three objects that I have been follow has made some interesting changes. The log has moved closer to the creek. I am not sure if it is from a human moving in or an animal. There are more holes on the top of the log that insects have been using for their homes. The lovely rock in the creek has had more leaves surround it and an increase in water level. The bush across the creek has had an increase in red berries. I was able to find out that the name is Bush Honeysuckle. I also noticed that there were 2 more bushes, one next to where I sit and one right next to the one I am watching.
The invertebrate I was able to watch was a brownish black with orange stripes. After looking on google I was able to find that the invertebrate’s name is Boxelder Bug. This bug is able to fly and flew away from me when I got to close. The time I did have with observing its nature consisted of walking and stopping at various points. At first the Boxelder Bug was resting on a leaf and then decided it wanted to get away from me. I watched it weave in and out of the grass blades while stopping periodically. I believe that it stopped because of either myself or something in the grass that I could not see. The actions of the Boxelder Bug reminded me of the Ladybug I saw the last time I was at my sit spot.
Water is essential for the life at my sit spot. The creek provides a good source of water for the plants to absorb and use in photosynthesis. The creek also provides a habitat for the many organisms with in it. Along the sediment at the bottom of the creek you can see the roots of trees showing through. The banks are also covered in roots from the plants along the creek. The fundamental process of photosynthesis is hugely impacted by the presence of water that the creek so graciously provides.
This time at my sit spot has provided me with greater insight to part of life that many forget about in their daily lives. Seeing the plethora of living organisms in just a tiny area is awe inspiring.
I think my sit spot also has some bush honeysuckle at it too. I liked the little drawing of your insect. 🙂
The thought of organisms being drawn to your flower mask brought a smile to my face! Hopefully you’ll be able to catch the log-mover in the act some day soon, and (a side note) your photo of the bush honeysuckle is very lovely-I love the detail you were able to get.
I really like your last couple lines! Once I finished reading it, it brought a smile to my face!
