11/2/19 – 10:13-10:56 – Breezy
During my 15 minutes of focus, I mostly tuned into the birds. A few minutes into observing in my sit spot, I saw some Red Cardinals in some bushes nearby. I spotted six to seven males in this time period as well as several females. They were all gathered together into one bush until they all flew off into another one, each one after the other. Besides the Red Cardinals, there were some other birds as well that I saw when tuning in. In the distance, I could see a pair of vultures circling in the distance and we all know what that means. And then right above my head, there were a couple Chickadees fluttering around in the Oak tree’s branches.
Besides the birds, I didn’t notice much else when tuning in for the first fifteen minutes. They took up almost my entire attention. Later, however, as I was sitting there listening, I realized that I didn’t hear that many insects. In previous times I had gone to my sit spot, I had heard quite a few insects, but this time there was maybe the sound of one or two at most. This is most likely because of the weather as we all know that when it gets colder, insects come out less and less.
For the most part, when just closing my eyes and listening, I just heard birds. It was hard to focus on anything else because I heard so many different birds at once. Basing it off the different calls that I heard, I counted at least seven different kinds of birds twittering when I had my eyes closed, which was more than I had ever heard while my eyes were open. It was very interesting.
My ten minutes observing a species was actually spent observing a plant that I hadn’t really looked at in my blog previously. Its a large bushlike plant, quite larger than the one chosen for my three items, that at the moment is still experiencing the season shift. It has started to change from green to red and orange but it wasn’t fully there yet. One thing I noticed about this was that the side that had the most leaves changed from green to red were on the side where the sun came up and there’s not much vegetation growing in the way of the bush. It makes me wonder if the sunlight plays a huge role in the changing of this plant’s colors.
Not much changed for my three objects. The biggest change I noted when looking at my objects was that for the bushlike plant, it had lost a lot of its leaves. Sure, it still had some left however it had a lot less than last time. I noticed this about the other trees in my surroundings as well. A lot of them had lost their leaves and now they were just sat littering the ground. It makes sense since it is a lot colder now that we’re starting to move into the winter months.
Nice blog! That’s an interesting thought that sunlight might play a role in the changing of colors of leaves. I’m curious too, now!
Nice blog – glad you had so much bird activity!
