As the winter is approaching, all the leaves and animals has gone far away searching for warm sunlight and food or has hibernated. Remembering about my last Blog and its gloomy weather, I was not excited for my sit spot today. In the way, people were cleaning up the dry leaves in front quad with loud noise generating machines. Some of the trees were naked and sad. However, the weather was warm enough to prevent my feet and fingers go numb.
To my amazement, there were many sparrows in my sit spot today. They were flying from one branch to other, fighting and singing to each other and searching food in the grasses. They never rested or were still for a moment. They reminded me of squirrels I used to see in my sit spot. The surprising thing was I saw only two squirrels today in my sit spot, and they were far away. Talking about the sparrows, they were huge in number, may be more than 15. It felt like they also came outside to feel the warmth of the sun like me, sunbathing in my sit spot. When birds flew, they made the weak leaves fall from the see. It was beautiful to see the leaves dancing in the air.
Even the healthy sycamore tree just above me has its leaves turned into yellow-green and dry. The green sycamore fruit has also turned brown in color. I don’t think the leaves number will be same in this tree in my upcoming blog. On the opposite of sycamore tree, the red berry plant has lost all its identity. Its difficult to identify it as it has lost it leaves and fruits while the blue berry plant 170 S of red berry plant has lost it all the leaves. The blue berries have lost its fluid and looked like they were aging. On the back of my sit-spot, the water amount looked similar in the stream. It had dried once but after the rainfall that happened two-three weeks ago, the stream has not dried up. The surface of stream was covered all by dry leaves. Maybe in next spot, the stream will have the sycamore leaves falling in its surface.
The weather was soothing with the melodious sound of sparrows flying around. The grass has brown sycamore fruits and dry leaves. When sparrows were on the ground searching foods,
they camouflage with those brown fruits and dry leaves. It was difficult to distinguish between leaves and birds until those birds started jumping and flying. The whole environment calmed with the chirping of sparrows, however, the machines that were cleaning the leaves in the front quad was a distraction. The noise disturbed the whole environment. When the sound became louder, the sparrows flew further towards the edge of the campus and when the sound was not louder, they returned to the place where my sit-spot was.
When I look around my sit-spot, the leaves that should have been scattered around the ground were placed in one area. People might have been cleaned the area. There were only trees, which has completely lost their leaves or has dry leaves ready to fall. There are no small plants around but just a grass. So, I decided to look around the stream area. The grasses on the bank of stream were wilting, and there was a plant completely red in color. The red plant was also losing its energy. Although the sit-spot surrounding was getting lonely, I loved sparrows hovering around my sit-spot today.
You talked about how it was difficult to tell the difference between leaves in a tree and birds because the leaves move with the wind, and the birds are just moving around on their own. Maybe this is an evolutionary adaptation and part of why birds stay in trees so much. It would be difficult for predators to find them and tell the difference between the bird and leaves.
Hey Muna!
I also didn’t see as many squirrels in my spot as last time. the sparrows are really interesting to read about. Even though its seems obvious i never thought about their coloring as camouflage. In my last blog I had a bunch of birds actively flying back and forth between branches but i could figure out what they were… perhaps they were sparrows.
Oh those leaf blowers are annoying! But it seems that you were able to still do some good detailed observations!~
