I arrived at my sit spot in the daytime, and stayed there from 2:33pm to 3:18pm. I’ve gone to my spot during that time of day before – in fact, today I’d arrived just 2 hours earlier than the last time. Not gonna lie, I didn’t even know we were picking a time of day, so I don’t have any particular reason for picking this besides having it fit into my schedule. Although, another plus is that I’ve found that insects in that area are most active (or maybe just easier to spot) during the daytime. It’s only a plus because I had more to look at for my blog, though; I was paranoid the whole time, scared of having my skin ruined yet again by bites.
This sit spot experience wasn’t very relaxing as I was in a bit of a hurry. It was also much warmer than I’d anticipated, so everything I wore was long-sleeved, but at least that helped me avoid bug bites. Overall, though, the weather was alright. It was very sunny and warm, with a small breeze, and a clear sky with just one thin line of contrail. I couldn’t see any animals myself, but there were many insects around me. I saw a reddish-brown, tiny spider with 2 body segments and variable leg lengths. It was walking on my blanket, so I tried to gently push it away with my pencil. It seemed to jump away when bothered, leading me to believe that it may be a Jumping Spider. However, when I looked up a picture of Jumping Spiders, I found out that the spider I saw looked nothing like them. I also saw a cicada standing on a plastic sheet nearby, and it flew away right after I took its picture.
Soon later, I heard a high-pitched, loud, screechy, shivery bird call nearby from the West. I didn’t see the bird itself, so I had no reasonable way to try to identify it or see what it was doing. Thankfully, it didn’t call again. I might’ve just gone up and left right then and there.
As a reminder, the 3 things I decided to follow were a yellow flower plant, an old rug, and a little groundcover plant. The little plant was eaten a few weeks ago, so I’ve decided to follow a small area of wineberry plants toward the entrance instead. The yellow flower plant is now in a pretty bad condition; it no longer has flowers, and its leaves are wilted, mostly dead. Sad! Under the old rug were 3 earthworms. There may have been more insects under it, but I was only able to lift up a small part this time due to cowardice. The wineberry plants currently appear healthy. There’s a small part of the area that has leaves with red tops and white bottoms, but most of the leaves in the area are green. Next time, I’ll see if they’re turning green or red/white.
Hey Mei, you did an amazing job! I wonder if in the future you would be able to identify the species of the yellow flowering plant, as I also have a plant of yellow flowers in close proximity to my sit spot. I think it would be really interesting if we were both to find the same flowers in both locations given that they are on opposite sides of campus and have varying environmental conditions. Another interesting connection between your sit spot and my own is that I also encountered a spider that was very sensitive to touch; however, I don’t think he was jumping quite like yours
I loved this post, it made me laugh a good bit 🙂 I would have done the same thing about leaving after hearing that kind of sound from a bird! I’m sorry some of your 3 objects are dying off but I guess that counts as them changing and doing something. Hopefully you’re able to get a couple more observations out of them!
