My sit spot is near the creek on a little pile of rocks. The rocks split a small part of the creek with makes the rocks look like a V. The patch of rocks is west from the opening to the creek and it connects to the forest towards the back of the patch. I chose this spot because it looked like a little island in the middle of the creek. I also chose this spot because the rocks reminded me of the rock collection that I have at home.
Sound:
When I first got to my sit spot, I heard my footsteps in the water and the rocks clicking together as I walked and got settled in. After I finished setting up the only thing, I could hear was the calls of the Cicadas. There were few moments where the birds would chirp but they got drowned out by the sound of the cicadas. Eventually, during my session at my sit spot, I could hear the water flowing south. It was faint but noticeable.
Sensation:
Finding a sit spot gave me a lot of anxiety, the thought of getting into trouble ran through my mind like it was running a marathon. I was wearing a hoodie out of fear of insects falling into my hair, I could feel the hot air circling in my hoodie and my mask making me sweat more. While I was walking over to my sit spot, I could feel the water slowly seep into my shoe after slipping in the water. When I sat down, I could feel the rocks underneath me. The rocks were not uncomfortable. They were cool to the touch, it felt like the rocks were a few degrees below the temperature in the air. The creek water was cold, it was nothing like the streams of water in the mountains I’ve been too. After sitting for a while, I could feel an ever so slight breeze that blew on the sweat on my forehead making me feel cooler. The longer I sat there the cooler and calmer I became. The anxiety had lifted except for the moments when I heard a noise.
Smell
The smell around my sit spot was not strong, unlike the mock sit spot. To smell anything around me I had to take my mask off. Once I did, the only smell that I noticed was the smell of mud.
Sight
First thing I saw was green, obviously. But while I was there, I noticed that there was a round rock, almost a perfect circle. Then I saw a really flat rock and a rock with Hollins written on it. In the creek, I noticed that there was a water skimmer and little bugs that bounced off the water like it was a trampoline. The bugs that were jumping on the water would sometimes cause ripples in the water. Behind me there was a pocket of water that looked weird, It was an orangey-brown colour and it looked like how food dye looks when you first drop it in a cup of water. The leaves in the creek where mostly green and yellow, only a few were red which I thought was strange. I also some snails, there was one in the creek that looked like a mustard yellow. Lastly, the last two insects that I was interested in was a June bug that was coasting down the creek and a spider that walked on the water.
Finding a sit spot was also pretty nerve-racking for me too. I also found a spot along the creek, but without the orange-brown stuff. While I was watching the water striders jumping on the water, I noticed they seemed to pick areas with more sunlight, did you notice any patterns about the water striders too, like did they avoid the orangey-brown stuff?
I think we have the same sit spot! I enjoy how you describe it, it makes me see it in a different way. I’ve been wondering what the orange-brown stuff is. Maybe we’ll be able to figure it out together? I’m going to try and keep my eye out for some snails as I haven’t seen any myself, what behaviors did the snails exhibit?
I also found a spot of water that was strangely colored! I discovered that it was because of rusty metal that was left in the water. Maybe they’re colored orange for the same reason? I like that you chose an island-like mound in the middle of the creek! I wonder if it will get larger or smaller due to the weather and rainfall?
