On my walk to my sit spot, I noticed it was a cold day and prepared myself for not seeing many animals or insects. During my fifteen minute observation, I focused on the water of Carvin’s Creek. As with last time, I saw fewer ripples from organisms on the water’s surface. It was a lot easier to see the creek as there were no leaves in the way on bushes or trees. However, there were a lot of decaying leaves along the streambed and the banks. I saw a few more leaves that looked white under the water. I wonder if those leaves were more decayed than the others? Anyways, the sun reflected off the water and I could hear leaves rustling. A few sticks fell and I heard the leaves littering the ground crunch as the sticks landed on them. Sadly, but understandably, I heard fewer birds. With the weather being cold, I was not surprised as most of the birds I had seen were small. The bird nest was still there and I could not see any insects.
There was very little sounds from nature overall, most of the sounds being from vehicles. It’s amazing how quickly sounds decrease when the weather changes. The tree with the vine that I am following did not change much from last time. It still is leafless and looks like a tree skeleton… If tree skeletons have brown bark. The creek also didn’t change much.
The sky had no clouds in it as far as I could see. It was a rich blue and I could feel wind. However, it wasn’t very windy where I was. It was cold and I could feel the cold on my face and hands. I saw one or two birds fly overhead, but they were just passing through. If there had been clouds, I believe they would’ve been going in the same direction as the wind was, the speed of the clouds may have differed though.
When I closed my eyes, I heard a few birds chirping and leaves rustling. I could still feel the cold on my face. It wasn’t too cold that I was freezing, but it was cold enough to make me a bit uncomfortable. Other than the birds and leaves, I heard cars drive past and cars driving on the road off campus.
I am glad I have had the opportunity to learn what happens as the weather changes, without just being a passerby. Sitting and observing allowed me to have a more interpersonal relationship with my sit spot. It developed a sense of care in me that I doubt would have been there had I not visited every two weeks.
It was pretty nippy this week, huh? Funny how we can close our eyes and pick up on things that we would of missed otherwise with our eyes open.
