My sit spot hasn’t changed all that much from my last sit spot session (#5). The tree has lost a few more leaves and a lot of the leaves have lost their green color more. The grass has grown a little bit longer closer to the wall but has been kept in shape by mowing otherwise. The clover of course hasn’t grown all that much since my last sit spot. The wild violet hasn’t grown all the much since , but I don’t expect it to start flowering until May.
However, it has changed a lot more over the semester. The wild violet has grown much taller and bigger than the first blog post it was in. The grass around my sitspot hasn’t changed all the much due to the mowing, but I’m sure if it was left unchecked it would be very very tall by now. The clover is much taller than before and has even more yellow flowers than before. The tree has changed a lot since the beginning. In the beginning the tree was very full and all its leaves were green. Now the tree is getting ready for winter, many of its leaves have already fallen off and many of its leaves have already changed color.
I observed almost the same things during this sit spot session that I did in my first sit spot. I observed quite a few birds flying in between the trees, some of the small brown ones Ive seen many times before and some larger ones. One had blue and white feathers, and while I’m not sure of exactly what bird it may be, it reminded me of a bluejay. The weather was fairly clear when I got there, but of course with the weather getting colder I had to dress pretty warmly. I heard some of the golf carts in the background but besides that it was very blissful, with no distractions.
The wild violet (still investigating how it was able to grow from between the bricks) is much taller and bigger than before which means it is definetely getting water from somewhere. The clover is much taller and is still blooming with even more flowers than before. I kind of expect it to get snuffed out (unfortunately) as it gets colder. The tree is still getting ready for winter, which is strange because usually by this point it would have lost all its leaves (or most of them) and been ready. It’d would be unfortunate if it still wasn’t ready by the time the real cold kicks.
The sit spot experience has definetely been an interesting experience. I learned about insects and just the plants I was observing during each sit spot. I definetely earned a new perspective and respect for nature. This has definetely made me want to spend more time outside and with nature. At the beginning of the year I made it clear that I was extremely scared of insects (and snakes) but now I feel like I understand them a bit more and I’m no longer that scared of them. I look forward to helping my parents garden over this year and spending more time outside on campus.
I think one of the coolest things I experienced was seeing the big daddy long legs on the brick outcropping near my sit spot. At first I was really scared of it and I just wanted to take a pciture and then get as far away as possible, but as I observed it a bit longer I realized that it was living just like me and I honestly think that helped me understand bugs a lot more. But I think the most memorable thing for me would be finding out that the “plant/weed with heart shaped leaves” was actually a wild violet. Overall, I really enjoyed doing the sit spots this year and look forward to doing more sit spots in the future that are not just for assignments.
Hi Devanshi! I absolutely loved hearing about the changes you encountered throughout the semester at your sit-spot. It was really cool to see how you described the scene of your sit-spot along with the pictures in comparison you included. It really helped me to envision these changes. I think that it’s amazing how you were able to connect with nature and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature and the organisms/animals/insects around you, even if you may have been scared of the insects you first encountered. I appreciated how you clearly described the changes in your three things and described them more based on the pictures included. Also, I find it amazing that you are helping with your parents garden and are getting more involved with nature outside of campus. Great job explaining everything clearly and in detail!
