During the first fifteen minutes of my sit spot I observed that some of the small plants in front of me had turned bright red. They changed color later than the other plants, which made me think about how those plants may have different cues to enter dormancy. There were a couple birds chirping to my left, but I did not see any of them. There was a dense coat of brown leaves on the ground. There were several types of leaves, simple and compound. There weren’t many of the compound leaves. The wind was blowing lightly from the south.
My three objects seemed like they didn’t change that much. The exposed rock looked the same, but I think that the moss on it grew some. The small tree looks a little more brown and comparing it to the photo it does look more brown. The stick had lost quite a bit of its bark and some parts of it looked darker.
While listening I heard the birds again but they were to my left, right and behind me. With my eyes closed I feel like I could pay attention to what I was hearing more. I heard the birds again, but I also heard the wind subtly shifting the leaves.
In my 1 m habitat, I observed the sun hitting the trees and the ground giving them a golden tone. One larger plant had bright red leaves and the others had a muted green color. The ground is covered in brown leaves. In all the brown there were a few green spots from the leaves of vines growing on the ground. There is evidence of difference species. The red and green leaves show different species and the leaves on the ground have different shapes representing different species. I did not see any animals, vertebrates or invertebrates. I saw decomposition in the leaves on the ground.
Before leaving I sat and and thought about how nice it is to just sit outside and enjoy nature instead of worrying about assignments and exams.
I liked your thought about how plants may have different cues to enter into dormancy. I think that the warmer weathers that we have had this year might have thrown off their cues a bit.
There is still a remarkable amount of color even this late in the season!
