Arrived at 12:16 pm

My sit spot is located close to the start of the Carvins Cove trail, about 10 meters off the trail, in a mossy clearing. As I arrived, a turkey hen jumped in front of me and up the trail, which was pretty cool. Sadly I wasn’t able to get a picture of her.

As I’m walking around, I found a large cluster of those fleshy green lichen plants that I mentioned in my last entry. Something cool that I noticed is they appear to be in an area that got more sunlight. The cluster we about 10 feet south of my sit spot.

I also found what appeared to be an empty nest about 15 feet up a three. The nest looked to be about the size of a basketball. I also found more of the berries I found last time. They were so plentiful, they covered the ground in some areas. There were fewer birds chirping today. However the bugs were quite a bit louder. Also the sound of leaves falling was much more prominent. There were also a few squirrels running around earlier. In the bushes to my right there were some small grey and white birds scavenging around.

The highlight of my time at my sit spot was when a little turtle emerged from the bushes and started to approach me from my right. He stopped about 10-15 feet away from me and just watched me for about 20 minutes. I got a better look at him and I’m pretty sure he’s a box turtle, about the size of a small melon.

My little sapling

There hasn’t been much change in the saplings I was watching, or the moss on the tree. However, I did notice something cool about the moss on the ground. The dirt and moss I had been sitting on the last time I was here got scuffed up by my boots and me sitting on it. Well today it looked as if the moss was slowly growing back in that spot.

Turtle boi

Now I get to talk about the turtle more! Yay! One adaptation turtles have is their shells. Their shell is their first line of defense against predators. Second adaptation is their coloration. The turtle I saw had a dark brown/grey shell with a lighter greenish brown/dark yellow body (head and legs). If I hadn’t already noticed the turtle, I would have either thought he was a rock or not have noticed him at all. A third adaptation could be their ability to hold still for long periods of time, which aids in their ability to camouflage.
