I visited my sit spot at about 8pm on Monday evening. The temperature was in the mid-60’s and It was extremely dark and kind of spooky. As I was walking up, there were people walking around the area as well, which was strange for that time of day. I have never been to my sit spot at this time, because I did not want to ever do my sit spot in the dark unless I really needed to. I chose this time because it was the best time for my schedule and thinking that the clear skies during the day would mean that there would be clear skies in the evening, so i could watch the stars from my sit spot. There was no moonlight to see by, so it was very dark and things were very hard to see. I had to use my flashlight to find my way around my spot. The sky was clear when I had reached my sit-spot at 8pm, but the clouds soon covered the whole sky above the mountains and city amongst everything. The light from the town across the hills illuminated the sky with light against the clouds and lit it up like the sun was just hiding behind it.
In my sit spot, I used my flashlight to look at the trees, and they look much different in the light of the flashlight. Since my sit spot was so dark, i couldn’t really observe some things, but i have noticed, overtime that the leaves on the mountains are steadily changing colour, and the whole mountain is covered in red and orange trees, now. During the time i have been observing my sit spot, the right tree has grown more of the fungus that it had on the side, and the long vines on the other tree have grown further down the tree and nearly to the ground.
During my time in my sit spot, I did not see any animals, not even the horses that live in the paddock nearby were visible. Everything was very quiet apart from the chatter of people walking by, the highway, and the occasional cricket chirping. I do not think i would ever like to do this again at this time in the evening, since it was very dark. If there was more moonlight, i think it would have been nicer.
My previous session was at dusk, so i was able to partially watch the sun go down. It was much nicer because i was able to see what was going on and it was not as dark as this time that i visited. I was able to see more animals and observe them, other than just being able to hear the crickets and the highway and not be able to see anything apart from the bright lights that are in the town nearby. I am usually able to see a few birds or small insects, but this time i did not see a single organism. I have to say, i prefer daytime sit-spot visits than nightime visits.
I loved your post! I very much related to your time decision for this sit-spot, I typically visit during the day time but due to needing another time, the nighttime worked best for my schedule as well. I agree with favoring daytime visits! Your sit-spot seems relaxing, and has a very pretty view of Roanoke’s lights at night!
I was also very hesitant to do my sit spot at night especially since mine doesn’t have such beautiful lights like yours. Also, I didn’t observe very many species this time despite it being during the day.
I love the photo with all the city lights in the background and it is also interesting how organisms aren’t making any nighttime appearances for most of the sit-spot locations near campus. The area also looks quite relaxing, though I would prefer the day as well.
