My sit-spot is near the Randolph Dorm, a little way off from the second-floor patio, and just to the side of Tinker Beach (hidden behind some bushes). I chose this spot since it is close to my dorm and is rarely populated, and as I plan to be doing my sitting and spotting during the early hours of the morn, this spot fit my needs just perfectly. I originally planned on being by a body of water (something about it just adds to the tranquility of it all), however with how busy I am (this being my thesis semester) I knew I couldn’t afford to be too out of the way, I needed to be somewhere where I could go that didn’t require too far of a walk. The spot I eventually chose was both relaxing and secluded yet close enough for it to suit my purposes.
The spot I chose, I decided to sit facing North-West. Here, I wasn’t directly facing any dorms, with any human distractions either behind me or far enough away to block out of my perception. I faced a slightly hilly field, with several trees in my line of sight. To my left (West), out of the corner of my eye, I can make out a tree (unknown), a pine tree, and cultivated-yet-wild shrubs.
To my right (North), I can see more trees (unknown), part of a curved brick wall, and (most importantly) the entrance to a groundhog burrow (her name is Frank)! Frank is the (real) reason I chose this spot, she is super sweet and a little shy, she frequents this burrow entrance fairly often and so I will be tracking this spot as one of my ‘items’. I ended up not seeing her this time, but I’m hopeful that I’ll see her next time.
I did this sit-spot during the early morning (~ 7:30am to ~ 8:30am). It was cool out, there weren’t very many bugs biting although I could see and hear some crickets and various other bugs (including gnats). I heard many birds, both stationary and also as they moved on and got fainter, but I couldn’t ID any of them by sound. I saw a young grasshopper, a few gnats, a persistent fly and some ants.
For my three items that I will follow, I chose: an ash tree that looks like it has EAB, Franks burrow entrance, and some tire tracks from a golf cart. As I follow these items, I want to see the changes that take place during the transition of seasons from summer to fall to winter.
Your photos are lovely and nicely placed, and I love all of the details you include about your location (and Frank). I could totally picture this area and imagine your experience here.
Your pictures are great! You really captured your spit-spot with them and feel like even without your description I could just imagine myself there and I really enjoyed that! It was also a smart idea to go in the morning so you wouldn’t have to deal with the constant heat beating on your back! Lastly, I like how Frank was one of your main reasons for choosing that sit-spot, its so cute to me and how you mentioned just one persistent fly!
I like the timing you chose for your observation. I think it was very smart of you to chose a convenient spot. I love how you have shared every detail with so much description and I really want to visit this place now.
I really like your photos! this seems like a really good spot. You did a great job describing your sit spot, I was able to feel like I was there! I hope to see how the weather influences the regrowth of the grass where the golf cart runs.
