My sit-spot is located outside of tinker and in between the tennis courts and the presidents house. This is a hilly location, with an amazing view of tinker mountain. I chose this spot because I needed something convent yet interesting. I knew that most weeks and weekends I’m booked trying to fit everything in and accomplishing everything I need to accomplish for the week. I have decided that Sunday afternoons will probably be the best time for me to relax and enjoy doing my sit-spot, with that I knew I would need a place with easy access and a peaceful environment. As I wondered around the field behind tinker, I was looking for a variety of trees that could provide a multitude of organisms to watch as the season progresses. As I walked up to my sit-spot I immediately noticed the view of Tinker Mountain, while I will be focusing on the trees located closer to my sit spot, it is also nice to enjoy the view occasionally.
I found my sit spot after much contemplation on the perfect place to spend a good bit of time in. This spot has it all, barely any traffic noise and I doubt ill encounter the everyday foot traffic of many other locations. As I placed my yoga mat out and prepared my self to relax and enjoy sitting in nature, a little alone time for once 🙂 , I noticed very quickly the surrounding trees and plants and knew that I had chosen the right spot as it will give me a variation over the season to watch progress. Here in my sit spot there is a lot to tall grass, two nearby trees and a large grouping of trees that I think will prove interesting as the time passes.
As I sat allowing my self just to focus on my senses I became well aware of just how hot it can be sitting in the sun, so now I look forward to bundling up when I go to my sit spot during the fall. Through my observation of my sit spot I noticed that the grass seemed to be showing the effects of the dry summer Virginia has had. The smaller tree to the north of my sit spot location also seemed to be showing these effects as well, it had begun to drop its leaves prematurely. The much larger tree I noticed showed little sign of being affected by the dryness this summer brought, its leaves were full and green. Then to the east of my sit spot I noticed a grouping of trees that seemed to be evergreens, which I am excited to watch because of all the wildlife they hold in them.
It was a beautiful day to make my observations on my first sit spot blog, there was plenty of wildlife to watch. The ants were out in full force today and seemed to be curious of me, however they were much larger than any ant I have previously encountered. The blue jays were beautiful, and I noticed they seemed to be living in the evergreens to the east of my sit spot, which is one of the reasons I’m so eager to watch this group of trees. Of course, there were squirrels, and they always tend to be amusing, there were a pair of squirrels that were just enjoying each other’s company and not minding me to much. They only stopped once to check me out and then continued to run back and forth from tree to tree, I was glad I didn’t seem to pose any threat to them because they are fun to observe. The only thing I found not so great about my sit-spot was when a slight breeze picked up going in the right direction I could smell the horse barn and all of its glory.
This first experience I thought went smoother than expected, I was able to accomplish sitting still for an hour and really enjoy myself. It was much hotter than I expected it to be for mid-September so I’m looking forward to doing this in the fall especially. This first time was not only a good learning experience in just observing the outdoors, but also for figuring out my patience and just how long I can sit still and just listen. I will say next time I will be bringing sunscreen as I seem to have be just lightly kissed by the sun today. Overall, I will say I am looking forward to many more sit-spot experiences, and watching my little place of escape change with the season.
The three objects I am going to follow are going to be three trees, I think each one has something different to offer so I am excited to see their change. The first tree is tiny and already losing many leaves about a third of its leaves have already dropped. The second tree is large and still holding its leave proudly so I will be interested to watch it finally change colors and start losing its leaves. The third object I will be following are the group of evergreens, because of the wildlife they house especially the blue jays I will be interested to see the level of activity as the season progresses.
