Blog Post 6:

My sit spot is a patch of green grass on the side of the library, it is very open with surrounding trees a couple of meters around it. In front of me is a bridge that crosses over a stream that leads to the theater lot. Around the rest of my sit-spot like in the back and on the side of me is the library, surrounding trees and then the library parking lot. The most changes that I’ve seen throughout the semester is all of my surrounding trees losing their leaves and the changes that I’ve observed about my three things. My stream in particular I really thought it was going to be dried for the whole semester because my first couple of weeks. since there was no sign of moisture at all.

I chose my three things because I thought they were very unique to my sit -spot and I knew they would be there all semester unlike animals were you don’t know if they are going to return. For the stream my main reason for that was because, I don’t think many people pay attention to that inlet that empties into the main part of  tinker creek, around the loop. Plus I thought that when it became active that it would attract a lot of animals. My mossy tree, I chose it because it reminded me of my grandpa and where my grandparents live in South Carolina. For my bush tree, that i’m 75% sure is a southern magnolia, I just thought it was very interesting to look at and just wanted to see how it changed throughout the semester.

This has really been a learning and helpful experience coming out every couple of weeks and really getting in tune with nature. Without this assignment I probably wouldn’t have gotten to experience this. I especially appreciate it because rarely in labs are you outside, or when you think of labs you think of things being indoors, and not really in the field. I also gained a new love for nature, I have never been an outdoors type of girl, trees, grass and flowers were never my cup of tea. Especially because outside meant bugs and bugs were never something I could deal with. It has made me comfortable with nature, I wouldn’t mind going outside two or three times a week and meditating and just chilling and taking in the little things that nature has to offer.

When I think back to my sit spot the thing that I think I will remember the most is my first sit spot session. Before I went to do my first session, I just remember not wanting to be out there for over an hour with the bugs and the heat. Then I was thinking about how it was going to start getting cold and haw I wouldn’t want to be out there when it was cold. But then, after doing the fifteen minute quiet observation that all changed, although I was deathly terrified of only being able to hear the hissing of cicadas, it was still peaceful and just allowed you to notice things that you wouldn’t have if you were just walking by or solely focused on getting everything written down in your journal. So my first sit spot session is probably going to be what I think back to when I think about this in years to come.
