My sit-spot location
For my Sit-Spot #5, I had arrived at my spot at 2:43 pm on November 8th and stayed there until 3:54 pm. I went during the daytime, between dusk and dawn. I had decided to go at this specific time to ensure that it was different than my last sit-spot. I have never gone at this time before, considering that I usually do my sit-spots during the weekdays and have classes around that time. However, it was interesting to go at this time on the weekend, when I was able to be more at ease from the stress of the week and unwind a bit mentally. I wanted to experience what my sit-spot felt like earlier in the day, and to hopefully encounter different animals. It was fascinating to encounter the different forms and variations of my sist-spot at different perspectives of the day.
The sky and the trees within my sit-spot
For my sist-spot session #4, I had arrived at my sit spot an hour before dusk from 5:14 pm to 6:35 pm. The weather was pretty warm, as it was around 75 degrees. It was about 52% humidity, with a light warm breeze that moved in the Southeast direction. The air quality was comforting as well, with the sun high up in the sky. The blue sky contained streaks of the white clouds, elongated to fit the landscape. Upon arriving to my sit spot, I was quick to recognize that there were much less noises of animals and insects. I could hear the cars for the first time passing by on the highway nearby much clearly. The bright sun illuminated the sky with a warm white glow, that passed through the trees and created a vivid scene among the horizons. The weather was much warmer than it had been earlier within the week. I recognized that there were not many changes visually within my sit-spot, besides the fact that there were many more brown, old pine leaves all over the ground, with the grass appearing to be much lighter green. I could clearly hear the sounds of small birds chirping, which seemed to echo throughout the trees. I could tell that the birds were far away from me, but I could still hear them chirping and singing to one another. I have seen the birds within my sit-spot before, but I wasn’t able to see these birds specifically. They sounded much quieter and based on what I heard, sounded like they were amongst the trees above me. I wasn’t able to determine the species of the birds, but it could have potentially been a type of finch. Another animal I had seen was two small squirrels that were running around, almost as if they were chasing one another. They ran quickly up the side of a tree and fumbled around within the leaves, almost as if they were arguing.
The ground covered with heavier amounts of brown colored pine leaves
My sit-spot that had once started with full green pine trees and pinecones, now remained almost empty within the pine trees, with dark brownish colored pine leaves scattered all amongst the green plants and grass. There were much less animals and insects creating sounds within the atmosphere, making it a bit easier to focus on specific sounds I heard. Normally, I would go to my sit-spot around the time of dusk, before sunset, however, during this specific session, I was shocked to find that the atmosphere was much quieter than what I would typically encounter. The sounds of light water dripping were heard somewhere in the distance, perhaps from an old water pipe. I concluded that the animals and insects are much noisier at around dusk, compared to the day time. The leaves and pine leaves among the trees surrounding me seemed to be directly affected by the seasonal changes. I would definitely consider going to my sit-spot around this time again to further see how different it is compared to the normal times I would arrive.
The sparsely filled pine leaves within the pine trees, including less pine cones
I had enjoyed this session a bit than my typical times I would complete my sessions, nonetheless, it was interesting to note the changes within the time of day and its impact on the seasonal changes as well within my sit-spot. I found that the weather was a bit more pleasant, as it had seemed to get a degrees or two warmer the longer I observed. I was revealed much less sounds and sightings of the animals, which I was not used to, however still appreciating the environment itself. I was even able to catch a few instances where everything seemed completely quiet, which was almost surreal, since it had taken me by surprise. As for the insects I has seen, I had notices a small caterpillar on the bark of a log laying on the ground, but it was too small to photograph. I had noticed that there were a lot more organisms and things I experienced within my other sessions, which I believe correlated with the time of day I was there. In my previous times, I had seen more ants, a stick-insect, moths, and other insects. However, I had encountered no insects within this session. Overall, I found it quiet entertaining to be at my sit-spot at this specific time since it allowed me to realize the grand differences in the animals, insects, and overall atmosphere.
It looked so pretty during this time! I have gone through the same scenario of my sit spot getting super quiet at some points-it’s kind of creepy but relaxing at the same time!
Wow I absolutely love the sun shining through your camera, I can almost feel how toasty and nice it must be to sit outside during that time of day. Although I get how odd it is to be so quiet during that time of day, I have difficulty attracting anything other than squirrels. Great job!
Wow!! I really loved all the pictures and the way you described things!! I have a question, do you know what kind of pine is at your sit spot?
