I choose this little quaint spot by the stream across from the chapel on campus that I happened upon one day with some friends. When we randomly walked by this spot, I could not help but be mesmerized by its beauty. The little stream surrounded by flowers and bushes where like almost of a garden, all the little and benches by the stream for sitting, and the little dirt path in the lushes grass uphill of the stream all drew me in the first time I saw it. But it was the quietness and seclusion of this little unknown place that made me decide to do my sit-spot here.
The first time I went to my sit-spot I immediately felt a sense of calmness. The serenity and quietness of this quaint place mixed with the cool late summer evening air and the light breeze all came together to make a sense of calmness. I believe I went at the perfect time that day; the early evening air was a perfect temperature of not being too hot or cold, just sort of there. The very light breeze as the perfect amount that you could feel it enough to have its calming presence there without being overbearing. It was also perfect as in it was enough to hear a faint brisling of the leaves in the trees, but not so much that you could not hear anything else, but you could still hear the other sounds the area had to offer- like the sound of cicadas and crickets, the slight ripple of the stream, and the occasional bird.
One of my favorite things about my sit-spot was being able to watch all the crawfish swimming around, because there was an abundance of them in the stream. It was nice to just take a moment and to just watch them as they ran into each other and seemed to be playing tag and just swimming around. The little garden of flowers across the stream was also very beautiful and contributed to the overall calming ambiance.
I’m not going to lie, moving 3 hours away from the town I grew up in, leaving my friends and family and moving to a whole city to start college- especially during these still very uncertain times, has been stressful to say the least. Leaving behind the known and familiar for the unknown and uncertainty takes a lot out of a person. Going to this little secluded place to be by myself and just ‘tune in’ the world around me and not focus on everything else was a very relaxing experience. Letting go of the stress of the last few weeks and months and just taking time to experience nature and actually looking at it and what was around me was a rejuvenating and meditative experience.
The three things that stuck out to me that I wanted to observe more closely and watch their change over my time doing this was the orange yellow ‘bell’ plants, a leaf bush, and a small bolder. I chose these three things specifically because I wanted to track their change throughout the semester. I know the flowers and bush will go through seasonal changes, but I also wanted to see what, or any physical and conditional changes happen to the bolder over the months.
